Our 2012 Pennsylvania Draft Horse and Mule Association
Youth Representative is Kristen Thomas.

A Note from Kristen...

Hello!  My name is Kristen Bennett Thomas.
I am 16 years old and am a Junior at Dallastown
Area High School.  I live on the Taylor Bennett
Farm in Glen Rock, PA in Southern York
County.  I am the daughter of Eric and Donna
Thomas, and the younger sister of Katie
Thomas.  Our farm consists of seven horses,
three dogs, and four cats.  Living on a farm and
taking care of animals is wonderful.  I have a
love and passion for all animals but especially
my horses.  I got my first Belgian Draft horse
when I was six years old.  Many of you probably
know Lieutenant Dan.  Today, he’s the senior
                                                       citizen of the farm.

Horses and soccer are my passion.  Soccer is a
team sport where you have to depend on your
teammates to achieve one goal.  You work together and learn to adapt to many
situations that become life lessons on and off of the field.  On the other hand,
showing horses is mostly an individual sport.  It’s you being judged solely on what
you know and/or how well you ride or drive.  Horsemanship teaches you patience,
understanding, responsibility and how to work with an animal who doesn’t always
want to do what you want it to.  Taking your time with a kind hand pays off and
creates a forever bond with your horse.

As youth representative, I would take time as well to help teach people about the
wonders of the draft horse breed.  I would share my knowledge and love of these
gentle giants, especially to young children who are eager to learn and have a
passion for horses.  I believe I would be suited for this role, as I want to be a
teacher in the future.  This position would give me hands on teaching experience
and allow me to improve my communication skills.

Thank you for taking time to get a little glimpse into my life.
